When I am not listening to purely electronic music, i like bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, The Cure as well as ethereal gothic/darkwave type stuff like Sub Version, John Koviak etc. I also really like psychedelic rock like Pink Floyd.
in the last years i have mostly been listening to the very oldschool electronic (space~synth~krautrock) music from the 60s to the 80s. so much great forgotten music from those days. especially from some eastern countries you would never expect to have released such music.
some of my favourite artists in that field are definitly Tangerine Dream and their late 70s~early 80s releases (after that they went pretty much cheese ..like most of the old synth acts).
Edgar Froese's "Stuntman" solo album is one of my favourites.
Love Tangerine Dream!! i also have been getting a lot into those days of electronic music...its almost like classical for us freaks. I do love classical too though, its an important thing to know and understand!
Yeah, why would they...just little freaks stuck on a laptop screen ;D ...i love classical music too, hard to make music without knowing the true theory behind it.
Have you ever seen the U.S. version of the film "Legend", directed by Ridley Scott in 1985? The entire soundtrack was done by Tangerine Dream and it is really good. Unfortunately the DVD release of this movie is a completely different soundtrack that was the part of the original Eurpoean release. You have to get a copy of the old VHS version, or a rare copy of the original U.S. soundtrack. Its worth looking out for... the juxtoposition of the spacy synths with the 80s fairy tale sci-fi imagery is pretty great IMO. I would love to hear some other recommendations of Tangerine Albums I should check out.
yes i bought the american special edition DVD which includes Tangerine Dreams score and the original one by Jerry Goldsmith. (the film makers decided to get something more hip back then ...and got TD to do an alternative score).
to be honest i don't really like this TD score... thats from the digital synth phase (mid~late 80s) when they went way too new age~world music~cheesy for my taste. :)
they did many very good scores before though imo...
the one for "Sourcerer" is my favourite and it was also their breakthrough in the movie score business i think. they also did scores for many bad little low budget movies...
but their music most times makes the films enjoyable.. :o)
some of my favourite TD albums:
-Ricochet (1975)
-Stratosfear (1976)
-Sourcerer OST (1977)
-White Eagle (1982)
-Wavelength OST (1983)
...+tons more
Edgar Froese's 4~5 solo LPs are all great...
especially "Stuntman" (1979) and the score for "Kamikaze 1989" (1982)
by now they must have done nearly 100 albums...
huge backkatalog... but their late 70s~early 80s phase is the best imo.
